The Vintage Cool Fine Print
Raton Pass Motor Inn was built in 1956, and we’ve worked hard to keep that vintage vibe while adding modern comforts. Our rooms have memory-foam mattresses, streaming TVs, microwaves, mini fridges, and air conditioning.
1956 was a long time ago. Some things here are original, some things are simply old, and some things have acquired a little character along the way. If you appreciate mid-century modern style and a little history, you’re going to have a great experience.
A Few Things to Know About Our Rooms
Because the Inn was built in the 1950s, you may encounter:
· Floors that feel uneven in places.
· Doorways that are narrow.
· Toilets and sinks that are noticeably lower than those in modern hotels—apparently, people really were smaller in the 1950s.
· No walk-in showers or grab bars.
· Other points of character, charm, and patina that come with a well-loved vintage property.
If you have mobility limitations or specific accessibility needs, please call us before booking. We’re happy to talk through the room and help determine whether we can comfortably accommodate your needs.
Those Fabulous Old Windows
One of our favorite original features is also one of our quirkiest: our mid-century modern DiMaggio windows.
The DiMaggio window system was developed right here in Raton, New Mexico, in the mid-20th century and is a unique piece of Southwest history. Unfortunately, they are also irreplaceable…literally.
The window cranks are still there, but after 70 years, they’re sometimes more decorative than functional and may no longer open and close the Venetian blinds between the panes. The vents below the windows do operate, although they’re not airtight.
For a little extra airflow, open the vents in the front room and in the bathroom to create a cross breeze.
Yes, We’re This Close to Nature
The Inn backs right up to Raton Pass, which means we sit on nature’s doorstep. That’s one of the things we love about being here, but it also means we occasionally share the property with some of our neighbors.
Depending on the season, you may encounter lizards, bees, spiders, bugs, snakes, and other wildlife (large and small).
We do what we can to keep unwanted guests outside where they belong, but this is New Mexico, not a hermetically sealed box. If you see a critter, please let us know and we’ll do our best to help.
In Other Words…
Raton Pass Motor Inn is vintage, not vintage-inspired. It was built in 1956, and while we update what we can without stripping away its character, we haven’t tried to turn it into something it isn’t. We think that’s part of the fun.
